Malignaggi Capitalizes on Fair Shake and Gets Victory

Malignaggi Capitalizes on Fair Shake and Gets Victory

Saturday night, on the main event of HBO's Boxing After Dark card, Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi, 27-3 (5), used his jab and speed to defeat Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz, 35-3 (17), registering a 12 round unanimous decision to become the new NABO Welterweight Champion. It was a rematch of their fight four months ago for the vacant NABO Junior Welter Weight Title Fight. Diaz won the vacant title back in August, but not without controversy as many thought that Malignaggi should have won. One judge scored the fight a lopsided 118-110 while the other judges scored the fight

Vitali Klitschko Dominates as Kevin Johnson Embarrasses!

Vitali Klitschko Dominates as Kevin Johnson Embarrasses!

Vitali Klitschko, 39-2 (37), continued the domination by the Klitschko brothers in the heavyweight division, by defending his WBC heavyweight title on Saturday in Bern, Switzerland. The latest victim of the Klitschko’s was Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson, 22-1-1 (9), who barely put up a sparring partner type challenge in a unanimous decision win by Vitali.  Johnson seemed confused and battered from the get go, being backed up along the ropes by Vitali. Johnson, a counter puncher at heart, never seemed to figure out that counter punches only work when thrown. It seemed that Johnson forgot that  he was in a heavyweight title fight.

Remember, You're a Journalist

I know that I lose my journalistic credibility in many ways. I argue on youtube, I use run-on sentences, I even fail to check my spelling sometimes, when it was one of the only things I was any good at in school (sadly, typing did not follow suit).  However, this can be tolerated in me, (since I have an editor) and since I am currently not employed by HBO and several networks over my 30+ year career in broadcasting.

Let me "butt" in...

Let me

Doesn't it seem headbutts are becoming fight-altering with more and more regularity?  Also, it isn't just cuts that are involved now.  From the Nate Campbell blindness against Timothy Bradley, to the similar reaction of Hasim Rahman against James Toney, to the headbutt-knockout endured by Vivian Harris, the collision of heads seems to become more dangerous as time passes.

The Story of Middleweight Contender Miguel Espino and Trainer John Bray

The Story of Middleweight Contender Miguel Espino and Trainer John Bray

There are few fighters who excel in the beautiful sport we call boxing.  Many pugilists have come from various backgrounds and learned to fight on the tough streets they call home.  There are also some, who just have the God given talent for boxing, but not every boxer has had it easy and almost all have paid their dues. This is a story of two boxers who have been through the same struggle growing up and by fate, would come together to build a relationship of teacher and pupil.  Both would learn to box at a very young age, have outstanding amateur careers and turn professional.  However, the sport of boxing is tough where fame and fortune could lead one to a fork in the road with an ultimate personal decision; which path do I take?

PUNISHMENT FOR OFFICIALS WHO BLOW CALLS

PUNISHMENT FOR OFFICIALS WHO BLOW CALLS

In the wake of the recent Ali Funeka vs. Joan Guzman controversy, let me advance the radical theory that referees and judges should have to answer for their idiotic calls.  In my opinion, the 116-112 scorecard was correct.  Certainly one could see it a bit wider for Funeka, yet to see it 115-113 required some creative scoring, and to see if 114-114 highlights blatant bias, if not outright corruption.  Now, we already know how this is going to play out.  Funeka will get another title shot, but no decision will be reversed.  And more importantly, the two blind mice who scored this fight incorrectly will be right back to work next week.  That last part is tragic.

WHO SHOULD RETIRE - CLASS OF 2000

This is another installment in the series, "Fighters who should hang 'em up".  It makes me feel old (at only 33) to be saying this, but there are already fighters whose entire career has taken place in the 21st century, who should fight no longer.  Let us now take a look at these three 2000 Olympians.  Bear in mind, I know these three men can still fight, however, I am not looking at retriing someone when they reach a pathetic level.  I am looking to spare them this phase, and spot the chance to retire once the peak has been reached, and the downslide has begun.   Also, I believe the goal is to get out when potential risks begin to seriously outweigh the rewards.

First we were forced to watch Chad Dawson dominate Antonio Tarver a second time.  Now, we are going to be subjected to watching David Haye box circles around Nicolai Valuev a second time.  My pick for that fight remains the same, with Haye winning, but getting screwed out of a decision.  This is the modus operandi of promoter Wilfried Sauerland, and apparently it didn't quite work the last time.  Therefore Valuev's promotional outlet will no doubt bring the fight back to Germany, buy more friendly judges, and pull yet another lousy decision in their fighter's favor.
