Lennox Lewis looking back on a boxing great: Part One

Throughout the years of boxing, the “sweet science” has produced many boxing heavyweight greats, decades of fights and fighters have come and gone, but a few names have stood the test of time. Names such as Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, and Marciano come to mind, and the question I pose, where does Lennox Lewis rank amongst the heavyweight greats?
We start off looking back on the man and fighter known as Lennox Lewis. Born in England, Lennox Claudius Lewis, Lewis flourished as an amateur winning several titles including the Gold Medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Lewis finished up with a stellar amateur record of (94-11).

On Saturday November 15th at the LAX Marriott, we were fortunate to share the evening with world class boxing athletes, managers, promoters, trainers and friends at 2008 World Boxing Hall of Fame. Every year a group of the top boxing experts decide who will be inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Ballots are distributed and the opinions of these boxing experts are utilized to nominate the next great class of inductees. This year the World Boxing Hall of Fame welcomes Lennox Lewis, Marvin Johnson, Greg Haugen, and Pernell Whitaker.

He has won approximately 25 titles as an amateur. His pro debut is scheduled for October 30th in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho against David Lopez.  Wahacanka which means “good war shield” in the language of the Sioux Indians is a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton tribe from Northeastern South Dakota.

Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring adult people who offer hope, guidance, and encouragement. This is exactly what Ross Puritty is doing for some of the inner city youths of Wichita, Kansas.  Puritty believes that all young people deserve and have the potential to succeed in life and contribute to society.  However not all young people are given the support they need to thrive in today’s environment.

2008 Ringside World Championships

The 2008 Ringside World Championships took place this year in Kansas City, Missouri.  The event has been going strong for the last 8 years. And throughout the past 5 years the tournament has had over 1,000 skilled boxers participate from all around the world.
The tournament is hosted to provide a wide range of competitions for athletes throughout the world. With 6 rings, 2 sessions a day, 4 days of boxing and over 1,400 boxers this years championship had the largest group of competing athletes in the world. Entries consisted of  both men, women, boys and girls from ages 9 to 35 years plus.

2008 Oylmpics Bring Back Olympic Boxing Past

US Olympic team has gone down in history as one of the strongest teams in Olympic history, the talent on that team was unparralled to that of any other nation! The talent on that team was unparralled by what any other nation could throw. Boxers who would win fight after fight, would go on to legendary careers, some even Boxing Hall of Famers. The team was lead by a Light Heavyweight from the Atlanta Georgia area, Evander Holyfield, who was basically cheated out of a gold medal by a bad referee decision to DQ him for a late hit at the bell in the semifinals and wound up with a bronze medal.

The last dog days of summer are usually hot, humid, and just plain hellacious to deal with. The kids are ending their summer break and embarking on another year in school, it is the end of the heat and a start to the fall.

All though it is the end of vacationing and time off from the job, it is a beginning for one particular individual, that being the former heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster 33-4 (29) who plans on ending the summer with a bang, and beginning a successful comeback that will lead to another heavyweight world title.

A former decorated amateur standout, Brewster made his jump into the professionals the fall of 1996 winning his first eleven bouts via knock out before earning himself his first victory by decision.
