Some fighters will stick in a fan’s mind, even years after they have fought their last battle. It may be the fighter himself, a memorable fight or a trait the fighter possessed that sticks out, but they never forget the fighter. I had such a fighter that always stuck in my head. Growing up in Philly, I was blessed to be able to go into the city and pick numerous venues to watch fights, be it Cloverlay, the Arena, the Spectrum or, the best place to watch in Philly, the Blue Horizon.

NOT GETTING THE POINT

NOT GETTING THE POINT

In light of the recent Friday Night Fight performances of Vivian Harris and Randall Bailey, a disturbing trend is forming in boxing.  Not that it is new by any means.  However, it is going unchecked, and I feel I have to address it.  When a fighter is shot, or missing a valuable part of his game, it is often the nature of said fighter to blame it on anything but father time or limited skills.

Breaking News! Minto vs. Holmes Decision NOT Overturned!

Convicted Artist Magazine was just informed by heavyweight contender Brian Minto, that all though reports have stated that his fight against Donnell Holmes on August 14th had been overturned from a TD in Minto’s favor to a No Contest by the PSAC, in fact are false, and at this time Minto still has the win as well as the WBO NABO heavyweight title. Until there is a formal hearing, the decision stands as a technical decision in Minto’s favor. More news to come!

That dream followed Danny throughout his amateur career, were he won numerous titles, making his way up to the Olympic trials, only to be upset in the finals of the 2008 Olympic team trials. Cristobal Arreola: Living On Dreams

Arreola stands at 6'4”, 230-plus pounds, with a 77-inch reach. Now that's one scary Mexican; especially if you’re standing in the opposite corner of the ring. Cristobal comes from boxing stock. His father was a fighter right here in California. In fact, he boxed out of Hoover St. Gym, at one point; under trainer Hector Rodriguez so it's not surprising that Arreola has evolved into what he has become: boxing's next heavyweight contender. More than that, boxing's first real Mexican heavyweight contender. His rise has been historic, not entirely meteoric, but evolving accuracy; largely due to the guidance of Dan Goossen of Goossen-Tutor Promotions and manager Al Haymon.

Ishe Smith Interview: “May the best Danny Jacobs show up on August 22nd, because the best Ishe Smith will!”

A couple of years ago, a television program aired that I thought had a chance to re-shape the boxing world for the good. A tournament type of boxing series, culminating with a championship fight at the end of the season, The show, “The Contender” featured fighters that have been around for a bit, but for one reason or another, have not been to the top of their division. One of the fighters featured on this show was Ishe Smith, 21-3 (9), an unassuming young man who was undefeated at the time of the taping. Having seen Ishe fight and defeat former WBO light welterweight champion Randall Bailey, I immediately looked at him as the favorite to win the Contender belt. Ishe did not win the belt, losing a very close decision to the eventual belt winner, Sergio Mora.

As set up by the promoters, the main event for tomorrow’s card is none other than George ‘Monk’ Foreman III, son of the legendary former world boxing heavyweight champion of the world, George Foreman. Naturally most of the hoopla for the fight has been centered about the prodigal son, 6’5” tall and 237 pounds and only making his second start in the squared circle.
