Last Friday night at the Horseshoe Casino Riverdome in Bossier City, LA, Cage Kings brought down the house with their second installment of fistic festivities, this one being labeled as, “Destruction at the Dome”. And again it was bloody mayhem at its finest leaving the fight fans salivating for more of the all out war waged in the cage.
The main event featured fan favorite and former Ring Rulers amateur champion Will Campuzano (3-0), who was taking on the then undefeated jiu-jitsu freak Jason Horak (2-1), in what was a technical yet entertaining fight.
Campuzano, who is usually a laid back fighter jumped right on Horak in the opening seconds of the bout attempting as flying knee, though mounted by Campuzano and eating three solid shots, Horak was able to defend against Will’s attack going for a submission via leg lock, then later with an ankle lock.
All though the attempted submission did have an ill affect on Campuzano, the tough Texan was able to take Horak’s back, and the two went back and forth. When the round was all said and done both combatants had their moments.
The second round would not be as prosperous for Horak as the round and fight came to a sudden halt when Campuzano landed a sick right hand that dropped Horak. Campuzano finished up with an assault of punches handing down Horak’s first professional loss via (KO), earning Campuzano his third consecutive victory at the time of :38 in the second.
After the bout the victor gave props to Horak stating, “my hats off to Jason, it was a tough fight but I am not a quitter.” A defeated Horak simply told the fans, “every fighter gets caught, he (Campuzano) was the better man tonight.”
The co-main event featured two future fighter who will be trying out for the “Ultimate Fighter”, as Robert Thompson (11-4) went head to head against Christian Fulgium (6-2) in a 170-pound battle. The fight began with both fighters feeling one another out using some range finding jabs, Fulgium, who was not getting the better end of the boxing match tried to shoot in on Thompson but was not successful in doing so. Thompson took down Fulgium but most of round one was a bit of as boxing match.
Round two was more of the same with Thompson winning the stand up game, and after a failed rear naked choke by Fulgium, who repeatedly tried to take it to the ground, Thompson dug in from behind Fulgium’s back and won the bout at 1:23 in the second via rear naked choke.
After the bout, a dejected Fulgium told the crowd that he did not perform well, but will continue fighting and will soon try out for the UFC series, after a brief statement on the brutality and skill of MMA fighters, his opponent, Thompson told Christian, “hey big man, I’ll see you at the try outs in Chicago.” Rematch anyone?
In one of the bloodiest bouts of the night, Charlie Radar (6-2) and his foe Kevin Sniff (2-1) fought in two good rounds of action. Both fighters were trading shots in the opening round, with Radar winning most of the stand-up, but both having their moments in trading leg kicks. The round ended with Radar fully mounted on Sniff. As the second round began Sniff shot in after Radar but ended up on the canvas heavily bleeding from the top of his head from what appeared to be a punch. The doctors peaked over on Sniff and the referee used a glob of Vaseline to stop the bleeding.
When the fighters went back to business it was all Radar who landed an excellent one-two punch dropping Sniff with a big right hand, finishing up the fight with a solid ground and pound winning the bout via (KO).
Afterwards a victorious yet humble Radar told the fight fans, “I did not expect him to be that good.”
It was the grudge match of the night, as Blake Franklin (2-3) and Brandon Rondon (1-0) ceased the talking and commenced to fighting in a fight that had most of the crowd up on their feet rooting on their fighter.
Round one was awarded to Rondon, who had Franklin down on the canvas eating body shots and elbows in what was a tactical ground game. Brandon took down Blake in the opening of the second, but Franklin was landing some solid kidney shots from the bottom position. Rondon attempted a leg lock and then moved to half guard, ending the round with some elbow action.
Franklin, who was a decorated kick boxer as well as amateur boxer landed a good one-two and a leg kick in round three, but ended up on the canvas eating multiple right hands which prompted referee, and rightfully so, to jump in calling a halt to the action ending the night for Franklin, earning Rondon his pro debut with a TKO victory.
After all the pre fight hoopla, smack talk and disrespect, after it was all said and done, both fighters hugged and acknowledged one another as good fighters.
The second helping of Cage Kings was a heaping one, and again left the fans breathless from the all out cage action.
