Saturday night, on the undercard of the Juan Diaz-Paulie Malignaggi fight, two fighters in need of a win over a big name, met to get that victory. Antonio Diaz, 46-6-1 (29) was coming off of a close decision win over Javier Castro while Victor Ortiz, 25-2-1 (20) needed to get back on track after a surprising TKO loss to Marcos Maidana in June.
Both fighters seemed to come out sharp, each landing jabs during a “feeling out” period in round one. Ortiz seemed to be the busier fighter during the round. In round two, Ortiz began to employ his power to separate he and Diaz. Ortiz dropped Diaz with a solid right, seemingly stunning diaz and making him re-think this fight.
Ortiz continued his pressure, including continued damage to the eyes of Diaz through the next few rounds. In between rounds six and seven, Diaz’s corner felt that the damage was enough and the fight was called. This was a very wise decision for the corner of Diaz, as their fighter was not only slowing down, but taking more damage than needed.
With this fight, Victor Ortiz puts himself back in line for at least a title elimination shot. Only time will tell the next move for Ortiz.
