Las Vegas NV - Friday night at Las Vegas’s Planet Hollywood, veteran
lightweight Miguel Vazquez, 25-3 (12) scored a minor upset over the highly touted Breidis Prescott, 21-1 (18), winning a split decision. After over coming a flash knockdown in round one, Vazquez took charge of the fight in round two, scoring at will, often confusing and frustrating Prescott. Scores were 96-93 and 95-94 for Vazquez and shockingly 97-93 for Prescott. When the scoring was announced, ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas stated he was shocked at the scoring, as was this writer. Both Atlas and this writer scored the bout 98-92 for Vazquez. Hopefully the Nevada Athletic Commission will look into the scoring of this bout and question the judge that scored the bout in favor of Prescott.
Undercard -
In a night where Cuban Olympians and amateur champions were showcased on the undercard, former world amateur welterweight champion and now professional jr. middleweight Erislandy Lara, 7-0 (4), scored a unanimous victory over Darnell Boone, 16-12-2 (6), by the scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55.
Two time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux, 2-0 (2), continued his young pro career by stopping Roberto Guillen, 4-3-3 (0), in round one, with a perfectly landed liver shot. For Rigondeaux, it was another stoppage, albeit against a very over matched opponent. Time of the stoppage was 2:57. Rigondeaux has made quite a buzz since defecting from Cuban to the United States. Look for him to be headlining cards later on in 2009.
2004 jr. welterweight Olympic silver medalist Yudel Johnson (then known as Yudel Johnson Cedeno), 2-0 (1), scored a lop sided unanimous decision over Justin Paulo 1-1 (0). All three judges had the score of 40-36.
