In the first fight card of a monthly new series, a sold out crowd filled Club Nokia at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, CA.
In the main event, Welterweight contender Victor Ortiz (26-2-1-21KO’s) stopped Hector Alatorre in the 10th and final round. Alatorre (16-9-5KO’s) of Tulare, CA scored occasionally, but was unable to hurt Ortiz, who gradually broke down his opponent. In the 10th round, Ortiz, who had been uncharacteristically passive in attempting to finish off his opponent, suddenly stepped it up, and dropped Alatorre with a left and right hook combo. Alatorre rose on shaky legs, and appeared to surrender, as he turned his back. Referee David Mendoza then waved off the bout at 51 seconds of the 10th.
In the co-main, Featherweight Charles Huerta (13-1, 6KO’s) won a slightly controversial six round majority decision over Guadalupe De Leon (8-10-4KO’s). Huerta started out more effective, but gave his height repeatedly as the fight wore on. De Leon, meanwhile, scored with the more effective combinations. However, Although one judge scored the bout 57-57, David Denkin had it 59-55, and Max de Luca had it 58-56 in favor of Huerta. Convicted Artist had it 58-57 De Leon.
Lightweight Luis Ramos (14-0-7KO’s), of Santa Ana, scored a whitewash four round unanimous decision victory over Walter Estrada. Ramos was the quicker of the two southpaws. Estrada (35-12-24KO’s), of Colombia, was unable to control distance, and only scored during Ramos' defensive lapses. The bout was scored 40-36 on all cards.
Karl Dargan (7-0-3KO’s) dominated Jose Alfredo Lugo (10-13-1-6KO’s) for 4 rounds, before referee David Mendoza stopped the Lightweight bout in the corner. Dargan used his defensive skills and quickness to control the action throughout. The usually tough Lugo showed his durability, but little else, as he was unable to land any clean shots on the unbeaten Philly fighter. Lugo was never floored, but was rocked badly in the final two rounds.
Junior Featherweight Ricky Lopez from Oxnard (7-0-2KOs) had a rough go of it against always tough Hugo Ramos, yet won a 39-37 nod on all three cards. Ramos (2-5-2-1 KO), of Palm Springs, scorded effectively in every round, yet the sharper punches belonged too Ramos, who gradually took control.
In what was supposed to be the most competitive matchup on paper, Jessie Vargas (9-0-4KO’s) of Los Angeles, needed less than two mintues to finish off Robert Luna. Luna, of San Antonio, was dropped three times in the first round with quick counter shots, prompting a stoppage by referee Dr. James Jen-Kin. Luna (5-1-3KO’s) was dropped twice the first two times with left hooks to the head. He was dropped a third time by a counter right hand to the head, prompting the stoppage at 1:56.
In the closer, Junior Welterweight Carlos Molina, of Norwalk, scored a unanimous decision over Bahamian Hensley Strachan. Strachan was floored in the first round, but Molina was unable to finish him then, or in any of the subsequent rounds, all of which saw the Carribean fighter staggered. Molina improves to (11-0-6KO's), while Strachan drops to (5-6-1-1KO)
