“Razor” Rob McCullough Talks: Family, Fighting and his Future

razor_robFrom wild man to newlywed, from party animal to soon to be parent, from former champ to a future 2 x champ? That’s right, “Razor” Rob McCullough (17-5) has turned over a new leaf in life and the Huntington Beach born brawler is eager to get back in the cage to claim back his title of world champion.

The former five-time world Muay Thai champion who has competed in the KOTC, WFA, and earned the WEC’s lightweight title by defeating Kit Cope via submission, last seen action March of 2009, when he broke his hand while defeating Marcus Hicks at WEC 39.

Now fully healed and ready to wage war, McCullough plans on being a busy man, not only in the cage but his personal life as well. Rob is set to marry his girl friend Lexxi Tyler on October, they are expecting their first child in February, and Rob returns to the cage sometime in November.

In this exclusive interview conducted by Convicted Artist Magazine, “Razor” Rob talks, family fighting and his future, read on to see what the former champ had to say, enjoy.

Benny Henderson Jr.
The question that everybody wants to know is how is the hand?

Rob McCullough
My hand healed up very well.

BH
When can the fight world expect you back in action?

RM
I will be back in November for the WEC.

BH
Any opponent in mind?

RM
They have thrown a few names around, but nothing solid yet because nobody has signed anything. But I was told I will fight in November, I don’t even know the venue yet; they told me I would know two months before the fight, but probably in Las Vegas though.

BH
Is there anybody in particular that you would like to get back in with.

RM
I would like to fight Varner again.

BH
You broke your hand in your last bout, you say it has healed up without a problem, but is that a concern in going back to fighting, the fact that since it has already been broke once it could possibly give you trouble again?

RM
Not at all, actually that was the second time I have broken my time, this last time I broke my hand in two places, and it grew back thicker, so now technically my hand is stronger. (Laughs) Now I am pretty sure it will be impossible to break it on somebody’s head because the bone is thicker. I am not worried about it all.

BH
What has been the best aspect in being a fighter?

RM
Wow, it is a passion of mine and I get paid to do it, and on top of all of that, you get people who are like can I get a picture with you, that is probably the best feeling of it all. All my hard work has paid off, all the days I have went to the gym, now it is fun, I am getting paid for it and raising a family.

BH
Looking back on your career thus far what has been your most memorable moments?

RM
I fought an eight man tournament in 2003 and I won, I fought three different guys in one night, not many people has pulled that off. Winning the belts against Kit Cope, I finished him by slamming him on the ground, which was a pretty memorable moment.

BH
What advice would you give to a young fighter?

RM
Train hard. (Laughs) Be positive, and listen to everybody, advice is priceless.

BH
There has been a rise in popularity in the MMA, what do you think has contributed to the spike?

RM
The Ultimate Fighter that the UFC put it out.

BH
What can the fight fans expect from “Razor”” Rob when you step back in the cage in November?

RM
A very in shape and hungry “Razor” Rob.

BH
I do not want to get too much in to your personal life, but I read that you have a child on the way?

RM
Yes, I have a baby boy due in February, and I am getting married October 18th.

BH
What does the change in life do to you as far as your mentality as a fighter goes?

RM
I did not make fighting and training my major cash flow, I did it because I loved it, I did not have to fight to make money because it would take the fun out of it. But now as of May 15th I am sober, partying like rock stars with my crew, those days are over now. I have a family, my goals has changed, I realized that I am good at fighting and I have a lot of fin doing it, and I am getting paid very well for doing it. So my focus has changed, I am more grounded at this point and now I am ready to smash some heads.

BH
If you could send out a message to the fight world regarding “Razor” Rob, what would it be?

RM
Keep your hands up and your chin down.

BH
Anything in closing?

RM
