UFC 125 Resolution was held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday January 1st, 2011. The number 1 undefeated contender Gray Maynard battled for the UFC Lightweight belt against champion Frankie Edgar. Official scores were 48-46 Frankie Edgar, 48-46 Gray Maynard, and 47-47. The three judges scored the beginning round 10-8 favoring Maynard

Frankie Edgar survived several knockdowns in the 1st round defending his UFC lightweight championship belt against Gray Maynard in an exciting bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the opening minute, the two fighters cautiously took their time when suddenly Maynard dropped Edgar with a vicious left hook. Edgar got up but was quickly knocked down again with a stiff right uppercut. Edgar began bleeding from the nose but was still  able to weather the storm. Moments later Edgar was struck again with a second hard right uppercut wobbling Edgar’s legs. By the end of the round Edgar regained his composure and began firing back at Maynard.

Round 2 began with an ineffective high kick by Edgar. Quickly moving around the octagon poking at Maynard with quick flurries. Edgar’s offense began to wear on Maynard as he opened a cut under Maynard’s left eye. Edgar quickly slammed Maynard then added a takedown with a right hand punch to the face.

Edgar continued using his elusive footwork and well timed jabs to prevent Maynard from putting him on his back in round 3. With less than 90 seconds left in the round, Maynard landed some power shots as he trailed his opponent. In the final minute Edgar was taken down to the mat as he attempted a guillotine choke before the bell.

Round 4 began with a takedown from Edgar as he attempted a guillotine choke. Maynard escaped his hand and quickly got up when seconds later Edgar attempted another takedown. Both fighters rose to their feet and Maynard continued to chase Edgar around the Octagon. When Maynard got to close, Edgar made him pay with a comeback. Maynard missed a cross and uppercut and a two-punch combo when Edgar responded with a knee to his head. Edgar finishes the round with a three-punch combo and a double jab.

The fifth and final round began with a low kick by Edgar then Maynard replied with a three-punch combo landing a left hook. Maynard attempted to shoot at Edgar but instead was glanced by his knee. Maynard was rushed with an uppercut and two hooks that landed. Then Edgar released a three-punch combo that snapped Maynard’s head back. Maynard tried again for another takedown but was unable to. In the second half of the title fight Maynard looked for the takedown but was turned back Edgar counters and landed his shots. Both fighters ended the match standing with a series of haymakers giving the fans an exciting fight and winning Fight of the Night. Frankie Edgar’s record is now 13-1-1 and Gray Maynard remains unbeaten at 11-0-1 with 1 NC.
