Reports from the Ultimate Fighting Championship promotional company have confirmed that Dan Henderson will be facing Daniel Cormier. The winner will be earning a shot at the light heavyweight title currently held by Jon Jones. The Henderson-Cormier fight is scheduled to take place as the co-main event of UFC 175 which will be headlined by Chris Widman vs. Lyoto Machida.
Initially slated to face Rapael Cavalcante, Cormier ended up having to face Henderson after the American shocked Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and the MMA world via a wicked right-hand in March. The popularity and shockwave that "Hendo" caused with this improbable victory led the promotional outfit to consider Henderson to be in the mix for a world title shot.
The road is not easy for Henderson as Cormier is an undefeated fighter coming off of a solid victory over Patrick Cummins. Daniel is a natural heavyweight and was competing at the higher weight class where he had solidified himself as a contender. Cormier decided to depart the division as he did not want to face a fellow teammate for the heavyweight title. Even after this fight occurs, who the champion will be at the time is still unknown. Jones, who is the current UFC Lightweight Cchampion, will attempt to make the seventh defense of the title when he faces Glover Teixiera on April 29th, as the main event of UFC 172. The winner of Jones-Texiera will then have to face tough-as-nails former title challenger Alexander Gustaffsson. Once that business is settled, the winner will battle the victor between Henderson and Cormier."
Hendo" is sure to be an underdog coming into the Cormier fight as many consider his win over Rua his last hurray. Henderson may be up in years and has lately been inconsistent, but he still carries that deadly right hand. The theater of this whole scenario adds excitement to the upcoming months in the UFC world.
