BACK INJURY??

boxing-fighterYet another great fight is lost to injury.  I am speaking of Joseph Agbeko vs. Abner Mares.  Mares held even with both Darchinyan and Perez, utilizing entirely different styles.  Agbeko himself ahd outboxed Perez in their rematch, while he slugged it out with Perez the first time, as well as Darchinyan.  There were so many interesting questions left unanswered.  Now, it seems to be a bit quiet when discussing a rescheduling of this match.  Forgive me for being pessimistic, as I first believed the injury, but I have questions now.

As far as Joseph Agbeko goes, I’ve had sciatica.  A flare-up usually lasts a week.  Use ice and Advil, and try to alternate walking and lying down.  After that he should be fine, with a few certain yoga stretches to prevent future flare-ups.  If they take any longer than a few days to reschedule this fight, something is fishy, for sure.  Why was this bout not rescheduled immediately?  He may lose a week of training, but that should set the match back no more than 3 weeks.  As far as promotion money goes, it seems the promoters offered no discount to ticket-holders that I am aware of.  Maybe they thought these fights should not be offered together.  Long gone are the days of mega-cards.  Even pay-per-view events rarely offer a championship undercard.

Agbeko is facing another uphill battle, too.  He is a Don King fighter, which means even as one of a few top fighters in the DKP stable (Cloud and Alexander being the others), he is lucky to fight more than once a year.  With injuries, he may be forgotten entirely.  Remember how impressive his TV-broadcast title winning bout with Luis Perez was?  Agbeko did not see action for 15 months following that fight.  After how impressive Darchinyan looked againt Yohnny Perez, ‘King Kong’ risks being forgotten again.

Anselmo Moreno and Nonito Donaire are both in promotional contract disputes that could keep them idle (or at least in uninteresting fights) for quite some time, therefore options outside of the Showtime tournament are bleak.  Mares and Darchinyan have the fan bases, and the controversial ending of their own match makes a rematch just as interesting as the Agbeko-Mares finale.

Also, if Agbeko remains idle for too long, he risks being de-belted by the very strip-happy IBF.  That belt is one of his only bargaining chips.  As recent years have proven, winning doesn’t mean anything.  Morales was given a big money fight with Pacquiao, following a loss to Zahir Raheem.  Ditto Antonio Margarito.  Both Victor Ortiz and Shane Mosley were recently rewarded for unimpressive draws with the biggest fights of their lives.  Agbeko is good, durable, non-Latino, and promoted by an often idle force.  Things do not look good for him.

Your creative potential is limitless. I used to read about this topic back in college. I really like your pages however, I do not read well. Do you have Youtube videos on the subject? I wished you were close to me so we could be friends.
