Bound By Honor: Emanuel Augustus

emanuelaugustusmugPugilists come and go, as their memories drift past a revolving door policy that is familiar and known all too well in boxing and its immediate circles. This dictum of common practice has been set forth by those who have never even thrown a punch, be it in fear, or anger, or most importantly, to make a living.

However, there are numerous fighters who will not go away, even under the weight of such tyranny and opposition that is continually pushed against them. These men play by their own rules and dance to the beat of a far different drum. This drumbeat is one of a fighters heart, and its rhythm is the essence and soul of boxing. This caliber of boxer is the glue between the unseen seams that holds boxing together at its core, and keeps fans alike still interested in the sport at a time when questions have been surrounding boxing and where it's headed. Emanuel Augustus has always been this breed of fighter, a true throwback to the days when a prizefighter fought as much as he did for money as he did for honor.

“Have Gloves, Will Travel” would probably be a well known and understated verse when referencing Augustus' illustrious and noble career, but quite possibly a better one could very well be applied as “Have Heart, Will Fight”. Welterweight Emanuel Augustus' fight dossier reads as a virtual who's who of boxing. The man fought everyone, anywhere, anytime, and he ate some of the most foul tasting and disgusting lopsided and robbery laden decisions that the sport had to offer him with a grain of salt. He gave us the perennial Fight of the Year, that has never left any of our memories to this day, when he went to toe to- toe with “Irish” Micky Ward back on a scorching night in July of 2001 at Hampton Beach Casino in New Hampshire. He fought names like Ivan Robinson, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Soren Sondergaard to list a few. He showed us what class, workmanship, and a true dedication and commitment to being a fighter was all about. One thing no one could ever call Emanuel was a slouch. He was a true workhorse in the ring and had a style that endeared him to fans the world over and frustrated the hell out of his opposition.

People tend to forget efforts like those made by Emanuel Augustus over the years, as our attention spans grow shorter and our respect and admiration for fighters disappears along with it. This regard dissipates and fades like the sands of time, blown away by the winds of change and replaced with newer faces that will join its ranks soon enough The majority of today's fans don't want to see the brilliant skill that fighters like Augustus displayed throughout his career, they want quick knockouts instead. Opting to pass over substance and true essence for pomposity and flash, they lose sight of the fundamentals of boxing and what it takes to reach that knockout victory. Emanuel never lost sight of this element when he fought, and the incredible calm and dignity that he fought with in the ring will never be forgotten by those of us who were blessed enough to see him perform in the ring and dazzle us all.

Some say that boxing has become a popularity contest at this point, rather than the fight game, which it has always been designated as. Yet boxing is nothing like those other sports who share in that distinction of being called a “game”. Those “games” play with balls, while boxers have them. In retrospect, it can be said that Emanuel Augustus always had this type of mettle, stepping into the ring each and every time to not only entertain us all, but to show us what a fighter is basically made of and can do. He is a fighter and a man who could never do any wrong in the ring. Even when they would hand him the most ridiculous loss of his career, or warped decision, or hottest plate of judge's home cooking they could come up with, Emanuel would still take it all in stride, knowing that the fans knew better and knew what they saw, all the while with a big smile on his face and the beat of a fighter's heart in his chest. You have to admire a man like that. I know I do
