Coach Tom McKay  - More Safety Necessary |
I hurt every time a boxer dies from brain injuries. I did a small study in my college days on brain hematoma's from boxing incidents.Maybe we need to move forward and make boxing much safer than it is at present. Perhaps a very old idea of mine, having pneumatic gloves would reduce injuries of this sort, especially death. Fernie Morales suffered this type of damage from Orlando Canizales and though lucky to be alive, has a very rough life.
Keep in mind what Panama Lewis did? And I have to do some second guessing: just how thorough is the handwrapping and glove check done in Mexico these days? I have been around long enough to witness many ways of cheating by rogue trainers and managers and gamblers. There is no reason boxers have to die if we really do the right thing and take the steps immediately to protect them. A side bonus will be that boxers can have a prolonged career and not end up punch drunk and unable to maintain employment to support them and their family should they have one.
Have A Beneficial Thought because this incident is sad, too sad.
